Does Your Dog Sleep Too Much?

The average dog spends roughly 50 percent of her days asleep. While that sounds like a lot, consider that about eight of those hours are spent sleeping when you sleep, which means that for most of the daytime hours your pup should at least be awake, if not awake and running around. Some dogs require more sleep than others, but in general, a healthy dog will have a pretty consistent sleep schedule––you probably already know what your dog’s is.

Certain factors may affect sleep––weather, activity, commotion around the house––and it’s important to have a baseline understanding of your dog’s snoozing needs so that you can recognize if the pattern has changed.

Cute pig gets kisses for school fundraiser

BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A pig named Patti got a bunch of kisses as part of a Michigan school’s fundraiser to help out animals.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports that this week’s event at Northwest High School was the culmination of an effort to support the Cascades Humane Society. It was organized by students in an economics class at the school in Jackson County.

People contributed money to help select school staff members they’d most like to see kiss Patti during a school assembly. The school’s principal and band director were among those selected, along with the teacher whose class organized the fundraiser.

Combined with T-shirt sales, about $800 was raised and donated. Sixteen-year-old junior Taylor Schutte says it was “a lot of fun” and reflects that “we all love animals so much.”

A Navy veteran who has become a staple on the competitive dog breeding circuit said this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will likely be her last, as she has chosen to forgo surgery for terminal ovarian cancer.

Loren Marino, 42, and her Cesky Terrier Hector, 12, are well-known fixtures at the annual show, and have been competitors elsewhere for nearly a decade, The American Kennel Club reported. The pair from Toms River, New Jersey, took home an Award of Merit in 2014 and Best of Breed in 2015 at Westminster.

“It would sure be nice to bow out with another breed win,” Marino told AKC.org.

Human Foods That Are Dangerous for Your Dog

While we consider dogs to be members of our family, feeding them the same food we eat can cause injury to them. Dogs are not used to eating the oily, fatty foods that we do, and they can get diarrhea and upset stomachs from them. It’s important to know what foods are toxic to dogs and avoid them.

Chocolate and Caffeine

It’s a pretty well-known fact that chocolate is harmful to dogs. Unlike their feline friends, most dogs don’t have an “off” button when it comes to finding food. The amount and type of chocolate your dog consumes determines the symptoms and toxicity level he will experience.

Panda puppies are your new adorable obsession

Meng Jiang has painted her Chow Chows to look like pandas.

These pups are causing panda-monium!

Three Chow Chows from Singapore — Tudou and sisters YuMi and DouDou — are going viral because many have mistaken the dogs for pandas, because just like the bears, they are pure white with black ink markings on their legs, ears and eyes.

Unlike pandas, the pups get their unusual coloring not from nature, but from black dye that’s painted on their fur, a craze that started last year in China.

This bunny is already a giant and he’s still growing

This life-sized bunny is looking for someone with a big heart — and equally large home.

Atlas is a 7-month-old continental giant rabbit, a breed that can weigh up to 50 pounds and stand taller than four feet, who was recently surrendered by his owner to the Scottish SPCA in Glasgow.

“He is a very friendly rabbit who loves attention and getting cuddles,” the rescue organization’s manager Anna O’Donnell said in a press release. “Atlas is also an inquisitive boy who makes everyone laugh with his mischievous character.”

The bunny, named Bumper, had barely managed to cling to the roof before the local fire department arrived, the media outlet adds.

Bumper’s adventure began when a gust of wind from Storm Gertrude blew his cage open and thrust him onto the roof of the Woodbank House, a residential care home in Omagh, County Tyrone.

This unique German Shepherd is winning the Internet

Quasimodo doesn’t look like your typical dog — because he’s anything but average.

The 3-year-old German Shepherd, who goes by Quasi for short, is one of only 13 known dogs in the world that suffers from short spine syndrome — a condition that gives him, quite literally, a shortened spine and a hunched back. His head and legs are average-sized.

The former stray was found wandering on his own in Kentucky before being taken in by rescue organization Secondhand Hounds in Eden Prairie, Minn., this past Thursday. Rescues workers there named him Quasimodo after the protagonist of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
