ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Wearing a yellow vest with the words “adopt me,” a Chihuahua named Taco greets guests in the lobby of a boutique hotel.
The Aloft Asheville Downtown has partnered with a local animal shelter to showcase one dog at a time. Organizers hope that each dog will win the heart of a hotel guest and find a permanent home.
“When you go to a shelter and find multiple animals in the shelter, the six, eight or 10-year-old dog might be overlooked,” said Kim Smith, president of Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue. “But if you come to the hotel and you walk up to the reception desk and you see a single dog, your eye is on that single dog.”
Already pet-friendly, the hotel initially partnered with Charlie’s Angels back in August for a short-term community service project. But the program exceeded expectations.

Superheroes come in all forms, and my favorite ones have fur, four-legs, wagging tails and distinguished service records on the battlefields in the war on terror.
I am an advocate for war dogs, their handlers and the incredible humane bond that exists between the two. The bond between service members and their military working dog (MWD) or contract working dog (CWD) is powerful, and can be healing after their return from the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan. The healing happens on both ends of the leash as the invisible wounds of war, such as post-traumatic stress (PTS), impact both humans and animals.

The power of the human-animal bond is mysterious and inspirational. What I know is that both two and four-legged veterans deserve the chance to retire together with dignity, and that the four-legged veterans deserve more than they get today.

One story of healing and hope is United States Marine Corporal Jeff DeYoung and MWD Cena N641.
Their story began in August 2009, when at 19-years-old, Jeff went to special handler training school to learn how to handle and care for Cena in Afghanistan.

The Secret Service is shining light on two of its agents it says helped stop a man who jumped the White House fence on Wednesday.
Jordan and Hurricane — two Belgian Malinois — stopped the jumper, 23-year-old Dominic Adesanya, after he had ventured approximately 30 yards beyond the White House fence.
“Dog got him,” a Secret Service spokesman explained after the breach.
In recognition of the agents’ work, the Secret Service highlighted them on its Twitter account on Thursday.
