Groundbreaking Tennessee Law Lets Good Samaritans Save Dogs Trapped In Hot Cars

If Bonnaroo, Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry weren’t enough, here’s one more reason to love Tennessee: They’re doing right by dogs trapped in hot cars.

Under a law that went into effect July 1, anyone in Tennessee who breaks into a car to save an animal will be free of civil liability.

The move has been cheered by animal advocates.

“The ASPCA strongly supports states giving law enforcement and Good Samaritans the ability to intervene to protect animals suffering in hot cars,” said Chloë Waterman, the ASPCA’s senior manager of state legislative strategy, in an email to The Huffington Post.

Mike Franklin, chief of staff of the Nashville Fire Department, explained the parameters of the new law to a local ABC affiliate.

Service Dogs for Multiple Sclerosis

The Difference a Balance Dog Makes

Updated February 09, 2016

2016_05-09_PPLLC_BLOG_Service Dogs for Multiple Sclerosis_01

Service dogs are specially-trained dogs that assist people living with disabilities in a multitude of ways. You might be most familiar with guide dogs that help people with vision difficulties navigate the world and assist people with hearing loss by indicating when a phone is ringing or a baby is crying. But those with vision or hearing loss aren’t the only people who can benefit from having a trained service dog.
Many people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) have difficulty moving from place to place due to numbness in their legs, which results in feelings of instability and a lack of balance. MS-related fatigue can also cause people to fall, feel unbalanced or have difficulty walking. Canes and other aids can help, but balance dogs are becoming increasingly common amongst people diagnosed with MS.

Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday that lands on, as its name suggests, May 5th, commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which the Mexican army fought back against French interventionists – and won.

Today, Cinco de Mayo is somewhat divorced from its traditional significance. Many Americans have co-opted the holiday as an excuse to day-drink, binge on guacamole and, apparently, dress up their dogs in Mexican-inspired garb.

Here are just a few of the dogs who are celebrating the 5th better than you are.

NEW YORK POST:   By Melkorka Licea   May 1, 2016 | 5:14am2016_PPLLC_How youll be able to play with your dog from anywhere_01

A Manhattan inventor may have come up with the next big thing for man’s best friend.

PlayDate is a 3-inch orange ball embedded with a high-def camera that you can control and watch on your smartphone. Owners can change the direction of the ball, take photos, make it “squeak” and bark commands to their pooches or kitties.

U.S. Marines Vet And His Best Friends Show What We Can Learn From Dogs

Over the last decade, Pedigree has consistently tapped into the emotion and empathy so often involved in dog ownership. For last year’s launch of the “Feed the Good” campaign, the brand introduced U.S. Marines vet Dan Lasko to his then-new friend Maggie. Now the brand returns to tell more of Lasko’s heartwarming story.

Sustaining injuries during his deployment that resulted in the amputation of his left leg from the knee down, Lasko struggled with adjusting to civilian life. In “Learn from Dogs,” by agency BBDO New York, we learn how a service dog named Wally helped with his recovery, and how Lasko used that experience to help Maggie.

“After filming the first Feed the Good commercial with Pedigree and meeting Maggie, I knew I needed to bring her home with me,” says Lasko.

Owning a pet is a privilege, but the benefits of pet ownership come with responsibilities.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner:

  1. Commit
    • Avoid impulsive decisions when selecting a pet.
    • Select a pet that’s suited to your home and lifestyle.
    • Keep only the type and number of pets for which you can provide appropriate food, water, shelter, health care and companionship.
    • Commit to the relationship for the life of your pet(s).
    • Provide appropriate exercise and mental stimulation.
    • Properly socialize and train your pet.
  2. Invest
    • Recognize that pet ownership requires an investment of time and money.
    • Make sure your pet receives preventive health care (vaccinations, parasite control, etc.), as well as care for any illnesses or injuries.
    • Budget for potential emergencies.
  3. Obey
    • Clean up after your pet.
    • Obey all local ordinances, including licensing, leash requirements and noise control.
    • Don’t allow your pet to stray or become feral.

This wonder drug could make your dog live longer

The tablet is typically prescribed as a suppressant for people undergoing organ transplants. When given to mice at low doses, it’s been shown to reduce inflammation, fight cancer cells and increase life span by about 10 percent.

Kaeberlein says the pill, which he began testing on 25 middle-aged pooches last August, could produce the same response in dogs.

“Just based on our 10-week trial, we’ve already found that our control group saw improved cardiac function,” he tells The Post. (Needless to say, the world is very excited about the prospect of keeping beloved Rover around as long as possible.)

Consider the youthful canines at the Humane Society of Utah.

Sarge, a 5-month-old pit bull mix, looks at you with welcoming eyes. Storm, a 2-month-old Jack Russell mix, looks like he’d love companionship as much as peanut butter. And how can you resist the goofy, quizzical look of Jax, a 6-month-old Australian shepherd mix?

Guinnevere Shuster, the Humane Society of Utah’s photographer and social media coordinator, gave the pups’ photos the professional treatment and says the idea is just to help them find new homes.

“We try to do these photos for dogs who maybe need a little extra help getting adopted,” she said.
