It’s National Dog Day! We Share Our Dogs’ Best and Worst Money Habits

Here’s a ruff idea of their spending.

“Cooper’s worst money habit is ripping apart all of his toys the same day he gets them, which makes me spend a lot of money on toys!” —Veronica Quezada, MONEY Audience Engagement Writer

In honor of National Dog Day, we asked MONEY staffers to divulge just how much they spend on their pooches. While we know you can’t put a price on a pup’s unconditional love, the bills do add up.

This year, U.S. pet owners are expected to spend $62.75 billion on dogs and other furry, scaly, and feathered friends—a figure that has steadily increased each year, according to the American Pet Products Association. Puppy chow eats up the largest chunk of that total, with Americans expected to spend $23 billion on pet food. Trips to the vet are also costly, too, running pet owners a total of $15.42 billion in 2016.

The essential expenses are only part of the total cost; there’s also grooming, boarding, vitamins, and Fido’s toys and treats. In total, the APPA estimates that man will spend $1,641 each year to take care of his best friend.

There certainly are ways that you can cut back on pet spending without depriving your furry family member. Here are the best—and worst—money habits of MONEY’s favorite dogs.

Military K9 handler unleashes on F-bombing Hillary

Facebook post about encounter with Clinton goes viral.

(Editor’s note: The following story contains obscene language some may find objectionable.)

A former military K9 handler, tasked with protecting Hillary Clinton overseas while she was U.S. secretary of state, is now caught up in the dog-eat-dog world of politics after posting his opinion of the Democratic Party nominee for president on Facebook.

“It has nothing to do with her views,” Eric Bonner wrote. “It really doesn’t even matter about all the laws she broke.

“It’s because she actually talked to me once. Almost a sentence,” he said.

In Bonner’s original Facebook post on July 28, he describes how Clinton once flew into a blind rage, berating him and her security detail over his canine partner, and yelling at him to “get that f—ing dog away from me.”

K-9 in Montgomery County, Ill., dies from heat in patrol car

HILLSBORO, Ill. • The Montgomery County, Ill., Sheriff’s Department is investigating the heat-related death of a K-9 left alone for hours in a patrol car.

Undersheriff Rick Robbins said the dog’s death on Sunday has devastated the K-9’s handler.

Robbins thinks that an alarm system in the car that was supposed to monitor the temperature malfunctioned. He estimates the dog was alone in the car for several hours before he was found.

“We think there were two malfunctions,” Robbins said. “One was with the vehicle and the other with the alarm that we bought.”

Golden Retrievers Tend To Owner For 2 Days After Fall Until Help Arrives, Show True Loyalty

Some guardian angels choose to look over us from close by.

And such help from two loving golden retrievers might be the reason Judy Muhe of Palmdale, Florida, is still alive today. When the 76-year-old woman, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and lives alone, fell in her kitchen, 10-year-old Higgins and 4-year-old Dodger clung to her side for two days until help arrived, reported ABC News.

Muhe bruised her head and shattered her shoulder when she fell, and spend the subsequent 48 hours drifting in and out of consciousness. Her two dogs, aware of her distress, laid down next to her, keeping her as warm and as comfortable as they possibly could.

“The main thing was they let me know I was not alone,” Muhe told ABC News. “[Higgins] laid up against my back, and Dodger laid on my feet and legs … I don’t know what I would have done without them … I just love my dogs so much.”

This guy is taking his dog on a five-year walk around the world

A New Jersey 20-something has embarked on an epic dog walk, trekking around the world with his four-legged best friend in tow.

Over a year ago, Tom Turcich, 27, adopted a “mange-ridden street pup” he named Savannah he found while traveling through the southern US, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

“She’s been on the olfactory adventure of a lifetime. We walk every mile together and with the right paperwork crossing borders with her has been a breeze,” he wrote on Reddit.

He left his Jersey home last April to embark on The World Walk, a “five-year, seven-continent trek,” and has already made it to South America, according to his Facebook page, where nearly 5,000 people are now following his journey.

My dog cured my depression

When Julie Barton’s depression hit its peak in the spring of 1996, it was a golden retriever puppy named Bunker who helped her see the positive side of life again. Here Barton, now 42 and author of the upcoming memoir “Dog Medicine” (Penguin Books, out Tuesday), tells The Post’s LINDSAY PUTNAM the astonishing tale of the dog who saved her life.

I barely made it through the front door of my Upper East Side apartment when I collapsed on the floor. For months I had felt increasingly depressed — warped thoughts such as “Nobody loves you, you’re worthless, kill yourself” flooded my mind — and it finally culminated in my inability to do anything, even to move.

I lay there for a day before I called my mom, managing between sobs to tell her: “Something happened. I think I had a breakdown or something.”

”Dogs Welcome”

For all dog lovers every human should get a chance to read this!
Dogs Welcome Photo-01
A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in a Midwest Town he planned to visit on his vacation.
He wrote: I would very much like to bring my dog
with me. He is well groomed and very well behaved.  Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?”

An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote:

SIR: “I’ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes silverware or steal pictures off the walls or use them as a coloring book.
I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel.  And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here, to.”
